Foundational Sleep Axiom

Sleep Has Architecture

Statement

Sleep cycles through distinct stages (N1, N2, N3/SWS, REM) with different functions

Why it matters

Not all sleep is equal --- timing and continuity
affect which stages you get

Why Foundational

Foundational because the four-stage cycle structure (N1, N2, N3/SWS, REM) is undisputed across decades of polysomnography. Each stage’s distinct neurochemistry (acetylcholine surge in REM, slow oscillations in SWS) and function (memory consolidation, glymphatic clearance, emotional processing) is independently confirmed. Not all sleep is equal — timing and continuity determine which stages you actually get.
